An Overstuffed Fridge is not the same as Fully-Stocked

Are You Overusing Your Refrigerator?

After paying a mini fortune for the feature-packed fridge, you simply cannot afford to overuse or misuse the new refrigerator. So take care not to misuse it or overuse it. The repairs may cost you more than the fridge price or worse still you may not find genuine replacement parts and may have to go back to check the latest double door price list on sites like Bajaj Finserv EMI Store to buy a new refrigerator.

Do Not Overload Your Fridge

On one of his business trips to a seaside town, Nikhil Gowda passed by a fish market where he saw his favourite variety going extremely cheap. He bought four kilos of the fish but on reaching home realised his wife had stored chicken in it. Nikhil stuffed the fish into the freezer with great difficulty. Two days later, when his wife opened the freezer, she was greeted with a foul odour. The freezer had stopped working, thanks to freezer overload. Wanting to buy a new fridge, they were shocked to see the double door price list!

Packing your freezer too full is a huge mistake. Overstuffing can block the freezer vents, and lead to the motor and condenser working overtime and dying out.

Over-storing in the main fridge is also wrong. Too much food, vegetables and fruits can make it difficult for the air inside the fridge to circulate and if there is inadequate cooling of food items they will turn stale.

Overstuffing your refrigerator will also lead to the consumption of more electricity because the food required to be cooled exceeds the designed capacity.  If you make overstuffing a habit, the lifespan of your refrigerator will be shortened. You will have to rush to Bajaj Finserv EMI Store to buy a new refrigerator.

Clear Unwanted Stuff Regularly

Now answer honestly. Don’t you have boxes and bottles of stuff in the fridge whose expiry date has long passed? That tomato ketchup, half-used and with foil cover twisted back only absorbs smells of other foods; that bottle of baking soda that you put in, to stop smells from spreading across foods, that 10-day old bunch of coriander pre-washed and stuffed into a zipper bag …and, of course, that economy pack butter only half-consumed and the mint juice concentrate you bought from the hill-station holiday! The list can go on and on. If you clear the fridge, it will save it the task of keeping things that you don’t need cool. Also, there is a chance of mold building up on unused, untouched items.

Avoid Misuse, Mishandling, Wrong Settings

If you set the temperature wrong, you will make your fridge work harder or you will let your food turn bad. If the fridge is too cool, your food can be harmed. If it is too warm, your fridge will have to work harder and your food may rot anyway. So it is imperative that you get the correct temperature settings.

Foods that are hot and foods that are uncovered will make your compressor work harder. It is the job of the compressor to remove moisture in the fridge and uncovered foods spread moisture. So ensure your containers are sealed and loose food items are packed in a tightly locked zipper bag.  Always store food only at room temperature in the fridge. Do not move a full refrigerator or lay it down, as the compressor oil will leak into the cooling lines and affect its functioning.

Clean the Condenser

Some regular maintenance habits will also help to keep your fridge in top condition. Do not open and close the fridge doors too often. Check the gasket that keeps the doors tightly closed to see it has lost suction power. If so replace it immediately as it prevents warm outside air from entering the fridge.

As the fridge is often placed against a wall, you probably do not see the dust and grime covered condenser coils often. Make it a point to move the fridge a little and clean the condenser to make it work efficiently. Also, avoid keeping the fridge in direct sunlight or at a heated spot –give it space to remain well-ventilated.

Last but not least, while it is important not to overstuff your new refrigerator, it is equally important to keep it full! Empty shelves also make the compressor work hard.
