Originally founded as a trading company in 1938 by Lee Byung-chul, the Samsung group has branched out into many areas over a span of three decades. One of its parts, the Samsung Electric Industries in Suwon, South Korea, was founded in 1969 which slowly transformed into the Samsung Electronics we know today. It is a leading manufacturer of cutting-edge technology like flash memory, hard drive, lithium-ion batteries and semiconductor chips for big clients like Apple, Nokia, HTC and Sony. Known as the world’s largest manufacturer of smartphones and mobile phones.

One of the biggest vendors selling smartphones in the world today, the company holds the highest market share in India, when it comes to smartphones. In recent years, the popularity of Samsung smartphones, especially the Samsung fingerprint lock phones, have increased manifold in the country. According to the Brand Asia Survey 2018 report, Samsung mobile is the most popular brand in India.

In recent years, technology related to smaller gadgets like smartphones and tablets has evolved at an overwhelming rate, replacing computers and laptops. Smartphones, as computing devices, are becoming increasingly compact and powerful. Even though mobile devices were used for computing before smartphones and tablets took over the market, the user experience offered was barely sufficient. However, the problems with mobile computing and on-the-go connectivity were solved with the introduction of the revolutionary capacitive touchscreen.  The stylus or buttons were replaced with a friction-free screen that took inputs from the user’s fingertips. Capacitive fingerprint scanners collect fingerprint data by using tiny arrays of capacitor circuits. Capacitors store electric charge; hence they are connected to conductive plates on the scanner’s surface so that they can track fingerprint details.

Whether you call it a storage unit for personal data or an excellent communication hub, smartphones have made our lives so much easier! They carry confidential, personal and professional data such as card information, financial data, etc. After the development of NFC payment methods such as Android Pay, securing these gadgets from misuse has become imperative. Every day, tech experts are coming up with new ways to secure smartphones and enhance the user experience. Every year, new smartphones are launched with enhanced security, one of which is identity authentication, meaning how these smartphones can recognise its user. A large number of smartphone users use their devices to access financial services and make payments. Not only do these gadgets carry personal and professional information, but sensitive financial records as well, thereby, making them susceptible to cyber-attacks.

Very convenient use of the fingerprint sensor mobiles in Samsung can be seen while using the different apps with a single access. A very popular amongst these is the App Lock by Keep Safe. As the name suggests, it can be used to lock the apps in your device with your fingerprint so that only the device owner can have access to them. There are many such user-friendly apps like Dactyl-Fingerprint Camera, Focus Gallery, LastPass, Journey, Solo Photo, Samsung Pay, etc. Fingerprint Gestures, an app by SuperThomasLab, lets the user store their fingerprint to initiate different gestures to control music playback, launch an app, activate the torch, open notification, change ringing modes, etc. Though it isn’t supported by all devices and some gestures work only with Android 6.0 onwards, it is definitely a handy tool.

As an increasing trend in technology, mobile biometrics offers not only convenience but also security. Smartphone companies have started adding biometric and fingerprint recognition in most budget phones for enhanced security. Today, many of the mid-range smartphones come with fingerprint sensors in their specifications sheet.  Many smartphone users wonder if fingerprints really provide better security over passwords and PINs. However, researchers and tech security firms keep on challenging mobile biometrics, which in turn helps smartphone manufacturers address loopholes that pose a threat to the gadget and user’s security.

Which Samsung phones have fingerprint scanners?

Though Samsung was not the first brand to launch fingerprint sensors in their smaller phones, they have definitely taken the market by storm in recent years. They introduced this technology in the Samsung Galaxy S5 launched in April 2014 with a fingerprint sensor integrated in the home button. Since then, they have been trying to develop cheaper models with Samsung fingerprint technology. Recently, the company has introduced this tech to its A-series range of smartphones.

The year 2018 saw a massive launch of these smartphones with Samsung Galaxy A6 Plus launched on 22nd May, Samsung Galaxy A8 Star on 27th August, Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 on 27th September and Samsung Galaxy A9 128GB launched on 28th November. All the four models have Samsung fingerprint lock, continuous shooting and High Dynamic Range mode along with a 24 MP front camera and LED flash. They have a 1920×1080 display resolution and a 30 fps or above video recording capacity, which is perfect for high-quality videos. Another common feature of these Samsung fingerprint sensor phones is the powerful battery. They boast of giving at least 21-23 hour’s battery backup. Other popular Samsung fingerprint mobiles are Samsung Galaxy S9 64 GB and Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, introduced on 16th March 2018 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, launched on 22nd August 2018. All the three phones run on Samsung’s Exynos 9 Octa 9810 Chipset and Mali-G72 MP18 graphics processor. They come with light sensor, proximity sensor, accelerometer and barometer along with Exposure compensation and ISO control settings and NFC. Phones of every price range have been launched in the market like phones under 30000, phones under 20000 and more. Example the Samsung J6 Plus price falls in the under 20000 category.
