Led by Lei Jun, Xiaomi has been able to fill an important gap in the mobile phone industry, it became the first company to offer high-end phones at extremely attractive prices. At first it was just the domestic Chinese buyers but soon everyone realised that they did not have to spend $200 on mid-range mobile phones from other brands. Instead they could get a Xiaomi phone with features that rivaled most flagships. However, dismissing Xiaomi as a cheap phone maker does not justify their meteoric rise.

There were literally thousands of companies making cheap phones and there were cheaper phones offered by the big names like Samsung, Sony, LG, Motorola and others. Even though these phones had good quality and came with the right logo, these products were lacking in performance and features. This is where Xiaomi comes in, this is the first Chinese company to offer cheap phones with high-quality hardware. This may sound normal now but it was unimaginable a few years back. You must have heard about cheap Chinese products that look good but perform poorly. Xiaomi is the first company that changed this view about consumer products. The products are cheap because Xiaomi uses the same parts used to build iPhones and Samsung Galaxy S class phones. It would be unfair not to credit them for their innovative business concept. No one had done things the way they did before this, at least not so successfully.

Xiaomi may have revolutionized the smartphone landscape in China and is often regarded as having influenced other companies like Oppo, Huawei etc. They captured the hearts of the consumers and they built up a huge following in China.

Redmi K-series: Launch, price, specs, features, reviews

Today is a good day if you are looking forward to buy a new smartphone as Xiaomi India will be making the new Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro reviews available for purchase today. The latter will also compete with flagship phones like OnePlus 7 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S10, Asus 6Z and more. The Redmi K20, on the other hand, competes with the likes of Realme X, Oppo F11 Pro, and Vivo V15 Pro and others.

Redmi K20 Pro features a 6.39″ display with a screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and runs on Android v9.0 (Pie) operating system. The device is powered by an Octa core processor along with a 6 GB of RAM. As far as the battery is concerned, it has 4000 mAh. This mobile has a 48MP + 13MP + 8MP camera Exmor-RS CMOS Sensor supporting a resolution of 8000 x 6000 Pixels and the front snapper is powered by a Exmor-RS CMOS Sensor. Other sensors include light sensor, proximity sensor, accelerometer, compass, gyroscope. Other Redmi K20 Pro features include fingerprint scanner, graphical performance through its Adreno 640 GPU. In terms of design, it is 8.8 mm slim and weighs 191 grams. Price starting at Rs 27,999 for the 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage model and the 8 GB RAM and 256 GB variant at Rs 30,999, Redmi K-series is pretty affordable.

Redmi K20 Pro specs include in-display fingerprint sensor along with a pop-out front-facing camera which gives the phone a near bezel-less look. Powered by Snapdragon 855 SoC paired with up to 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, the device runs on Android 9.0 Pie along with MIUI 10 skin overlaying it. In terms of optics, the Redmi K20 Pro has triple rear cameras which consist of a 48 MP primary sensor + 13 MP ultra-wide sensor + 8 MP telephoto lens with 2X optical zoom. The pop-out camera on the phone has a 20 MP sensor. Apart from that Redmi K20 pro features a Game Turbo 2.0 option that allocates more resources for gaming. Apart from these, all other Redmi K20 Pro specs remain the same except for an 18W fast charging support instead of 27W.

What most Redmi K20 Pro reviews have highlighted is its design-new aura prism design brings out a defined gradient look that was never seen in this segment before. Multi-layer elements help Xiaomi achieve these striking effects.

The Redmi K20 Pro also has a glass-metal built where the front and rear glass are strongly held by a metal side rail. What’s more, the 3D curved design along with Gorilla Glass 5 layer, gives it a distinct look compared to the gradients mostly seen on affordable phones in recent times. Redmi K20 Pro reviews have also highlighted the triple camera module on the rear with the 48MP primary sensor highlighted by an accent colour ring and that the phone fits perfectly into the hands, thanks to tapered edges, of course.

The phone has all-screens, there is no notch and the AMOLED screen is uninterrupted. Xiaomi did some great thinking in placing the LED lights on the right and left edges of the selfie camera. There’s also music playback associated with the pop-up camera, but you can turn both audio and visual effects off. However, the Redmi K20 Pro pop-up mechanism feels a bit too slow and the placement of the notification light, which is on the top surface of the pop-up module, is also not the best decision. In terms of display, the edge-to-edge 6.39 inch Super AMOLED screen has about 86% screen-to-body ratio and hence it is much better compared to what Xiaomi had to offer before.

Xiaomi has also introduced Ambient Display, which the user can turn on or off accordingly to his/her will. The screen is bright and vivid and supports HDR content and DC Dimming. The MIUI 10 has controls to adjust contrast and colour tones under display settings. Performance-wise there is hardly anything to complain about, the 7nm process-based Snapdragon 855 that drives the handset is currently the best Qualcomm chipset and has a tri-cluster architecture. Experience great frame rate graphic settings with HDR quality performance while playing PUBG.

The 48MP primary camera essentially will act as a 12MP sensor with very large 1.6µm size pixels. There is no optical image stabilisation or any form of electronic stabilisation for the cameras. The battery lasts through a day in case of normal use but drains fast in case of vigorous usage.

The K20 Pro audio output is not so great but average. The phone has a bottom-firing mono speaker which is decent enough; it also retains the 3.5mm headphone jack.

The K20 series offers brains and muscle of Snapdragon 855 SoC, perfect AMOLED display with HDR support, and a decent battery life. The camera isn’t over the top but should be apt for a phone with an under Rs. 30,000 price tag.
