Top 5 common Causes of Road Accidents in India

Road traffic in India is a rising concern for the government. A rapid increase in automobile production and sale has mercilessly congested Indian roads. Because of this, road safety has become a top-most priority in the country.

The rising traffic situation has also increased road accident rates in India. In fact, 80 percent of road accidents are due to traffic violations and over 70 percent of people between the age of 18 years old and 45 years old are involved in road accidents each year. This has given rise to stricter regulations and heftier fines under the New Motor Vehicle Act of 2019.

Here, we have enlisted major road accident causes, its preventive measures, and penalties associated.

5 Common Causes of Road Accidents in India

Some of the major reasons that cause road accidents in India are as follows –

  1. Overspeeding

In India, the majority of road accidents take place due to someone overspeeding. When you drive your vehicle over the stated speed limit, it is known as overspeeding. While you can reach your destination sooner by driving faster, know that you are putting yours and other people’s lives in danger.

So, get comfortable to drive within the speed limit. If you are in a hurry to get to a place, leave your house early and check the traffic conditions on the route before leaving.

  1. Drinking and driving

Another reason most road accidents take place in India is drinking and driving. Any person who is driving a motor vehicle is found with more than 30 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood is charged for drunk driving.

So, to avoid risking your life driving under the influence, it is better to take a cab when you know you will have a few drinks with your friends.

  1. Reckless Driving

Many people need to upgrade their basic driving skills as it is still rusty around the corner. While the legal age of driving is 18 years, one should also practice safe and responsible driving. Driving carelessly without paying attention to the road and being on your phone can pose a danger to your life.

Reckless driving can lead to some severe road accidents. So, it is better to practice staying calm behind the wheels to avoid any hasty actions and unwanted accidents caused by negligence.

  1. Road Condition

At times, road accidents can occur due to degrading road conditions as well. The state of Indian roads is not excellent. Driving on such roads can get frustrating after a while. Needless to say, the problem of potholes in India worsens every year. All this can lead to some severe car crashes.

Therefore, it is wise to remain cautious when you know the road that you will be driving on is not in good condition. Not only will you be able to save your life but can avoid damage to your vehicle.

  1. Weather Condition

Sometimes you can be very cautious and a responsible driver, but the weather does not play along. During the raining season, the roads get slippery and can be fatal for people driving on it as the vehicle wheels can lose traction on wet roads. Also, the visibility of the road ahead is not excellent during foggy and raining seasons.

So, what you can do is get the vehicle tyres changed for the raining season. And drive your car below the stated speed limit. If the visibility is low, it is best to pull over and wait until the rain subsides.

Penalties and Fines

We understand that there is nothing much that can be done for adverse weather conditions, causing road accidents.

However, other things are pretty much in our control. In an initiative to get the road accident rates in India under control, the Government of India has made amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act. As per the New MV Act of 2019, people who do not follow the traffic safety rules will have to pay hefty penalties.

So, if you are seen violating some of the major reasons that cause road accidents mentioned above, the following penalties will be charged upon you.

Light Motor Vehicles:

INR 1000 – INR 2000

Medium Passenger or Goods Vehicle:

INR 2000 – INR 4000 and/or seizing of driving licence in case of subsequent offences

Reckless Driving

INR 1000 – INR 5000 and/or imprisonment up to 6-12 months for the first offence.

INR 10,000 and/or imprisonment up to two years for the subsequent offences.

Drink and Drive

INR 10,000 and/or imprisonment up to six months for the first offence.

INR 15,000 and/or imprisonment of up to two years for the subsequent offences.

To Sum it Up

The mentioned road accident causes can be avoided if you are a responsible and cautious driver. But sometimes unfortunate life incidents do take place, even when you are not at fault. Even though you survive the incident, it can cause damage to your vehicle. Compensating for the damage repair from your pocket can take a hit on your finances.

Hence, it is advisable to invest in a comprehensive car insurance plan. The policy covers all the third-party liabilities and damage caused to their own vehicle as well. Having extensive coverage will ensure that you and your car are protected at all times when driving.
