Car Gear Changing Tips

It would be fair to assume that the 21st century will see the automobile industry move away from inefficient, highly polluting consumer vehicles to electric ones that have advanced software, receive routine updates, are safer and practically have the capability to drive themselves. There is no doubt that electric cars will be the future of automobiles and that too ones with automatic gears. Yet, ‘driving stick’ is still the rage for many as driving stick is a matter of pride and enjoyment, one that makes you feel like you are in control of your car.

What is a gear lever and how does one use it?

A gear lever, gear shifter, or more commonly referred to as gear stick or stick, is the handle employed by the driver to switch gears in a manual shifting car. It is essentially a metal stick attached to the shift assembly in an automatic transmission mobile. The top of the lever has a visual representation of the steps or movements a driver has to make to shift to a given gear, and is often used in combination with the clutch being held down.

All About Car Gears

Most consumer cars and vehicles will have five or six forward gears, alongside a reverse gear.

In order to start up a stationary car, the first car gear is employed. It is also the preferable gear to stick to whilst driving in heavy traffic or any other route that may require you to start, stop or alter your speed often.

To switch to car gear one, push the gear lever to the far left, then move it upwards, delivering it to the top left corner of the gearbox. Gear two on the other hand, is a more economical mode than gear one as it does not require squirts of fuel to be consumed to start, stop and alter speeds. To switch to car gear two, bring the lever to a neutral position, after which it is moved to the left, and then downwards.

Car Gears three and four are more suitable for cruising around the city on relatively empty roads, and are most synonymous with a ‘smooth’ drive. Gear three is employed while maintaining a speed of 30-40 kmph, while gear four is preferable for speeds above 40 kmph. The fifth gear, most often the last forward gear, is the pinnacle of speed for that given vehicle. Most suitable for long drives on empty roads with no interruptions, the 5th gear can be switched to by dropping the lever to the top right of the gearbox. Some cars now come with a 6th gear, which provides more fuel efficiency. This 5th gear is the reason many still prefer manual cars over auto gears, as they prefer the speed afforded by gear 5 over the fuel efficiency auto gear six would provide.

The reverse car gear simply  enables the car to move backwards.

How to change Car gears

In order to change gear in a car, gently release the accelerator pedal whilst simultaneously pressing down the clutch pedal. Once you have done this, you can now shift one hand from the steering wheel to the gear level, or stick, shifting it based on which gear you wish to switch to. You may then retrieve your hand onto the steering wheel as it is both in yours as well as the interest of the public that whilst in the driver’s seat, you should have both hands on the wheel.

Once you have moved the lever or stick to your preferred car gear position, you can now gradually lift your foot from the clutch pedal and begin delivering power to the car via pressing down the accelerator. It is worth noting that while the lower gears one, two and sometimes three provided more acceleration, they also bottom out quicker, oftentimes before the car has picked up or caught up to speed. In a contrasting manner, the higher gears do not provide the exhilaration from accelerating like the lower gear do, but they do provide more speed in a consistent manner.

Conclusion

Learning how to change car gears is essential to driving any car. Even though we have seemingly moved away from manual driving, the shifting of gears still takes place, as the mere responsibility of executing the shift has been moved from the driver to the vehicle. Despite the shift, most drivers can always be found claiming that even though there are automatic and electric options available in the market, learning to drive stick is a must, as it puts you in touch with the basics.
