You might be riding one of the best motorcycles available in the market, but if you’re riding posture isn’t correct, then you are doing injustice to your body as well as the bike. For those riding a bike for the first time, you need to learn how to sit on it before you learn how to handle it.
In technical terms, your posture on the bike and your bike’s adjustments to the same is known as motorcycle ergonomics. The body posture and behavior are different for different models.
Here are the three most common bike riding postures.
The Standard Position
If you own a standard bike for your daily commute, then the standard position is ideal for your comfort. It is an upright riding position and observed to be comfortable for body shapes and sizes. It is a neutral posture. The posture puts less strain on the joints and spine and is a natural resting position for humans.
All you have to do to get into the standard position is sit with your back upright, shoulders stacked above the hips and slightly pushed back. Make sure that your shoulders and back are not hunched. If you keep your back straight, the shoulders will follow the pattern. So, all you need to do is to keep your back straight.
The Cruiser Position
Another position that can be used when riding standard bikes is the cruiser position. There is no much difference between the standard position and the cruiser position. The exception here is the lower legs alignment.
You will notice special footrests in the front body of your bike along with the ones that are diagonal to your seat. Your bike also needs to have a higher handlebar to get into the cruiser posture. However, it is because of the footrest that facilitates this posture.
Here, your shoulders and back remain the same as that of the standard position, and your ankles need to be in line with the hips. The cruiser posture allows your feet to support the rest of the body, further letting the upper body relax.
The Sports Position
The sports posture is quite famous among people who love to speed their bikes. The formula race riders have a sports posture, which is also similar to a jockey on a racehorse. It is ideal if you have a sports bike since the make and model are designed in that way.
Here, the upper body is lead forward. However, the back should not be bent and needs to be straight. Avoiding to do so might lead to severe back pains. The best way to do the sports position is to lean forward with a straight back and firm shoulders.
In the lower body, the feet are bent back behind you as you are leaning forward. You can rest a little on your heels. It will lessen the strain on your back while riding.
The Bottom Line
The incorrect riding position can put a strain on your shoulders and spine. It can lead to severe issues restricting you from riding your motorcycles again. Inheriting the correct posture will refrain you from acquiring serious spine issues in the future.
Incorrect postures can lead you to lose control of your bike, further leading to road mishaps. To protect your precious possession from road accidents, theft, or loss due to man-made and natural disasters, buy comprehensive bike insurance and stay safe.
