Just as getting Third-Party Vehicle Insurance is mandatory in India, having a valid PUC is mandatory for renewing Motor Insurance. Whether you own a four-wheeler or a two-wheeler, as a fuel-driven vehicle, it will cause pollution. The Supreme Court had issued a slew of directions over rising vehicular pollution last year. One of them was non-renewal of Motor Insurance unless the owner provides a PUC certificate to their respective insurance providers. Hence, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) had made it mandatory to have a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate at the time of Motor Insurance renewal. Making PUC mandatory is majorly intended for keeping the pollution levels in check. Besides the PUC certificate, a fitness certificate is also a mandatory requirement for all registered vehicles that are over 15 years old.
Need For PUC
The polluting gasses released by vehicles not only affects people’s health but also has adverse effects on the environment. At present, the pollution levels in the cities of India are rising rapidly, hence as responsible citizens, everyone must play their part in curbing pollution. Choosing public transport, carpooling, maintaining your vehicle and keeping its pollution levels in check are some of the small steps that every individual can take to prevent vehicular pollution. Getting a PUC certification ensures that your vehicle does not cross the permissible pollution limits.
What Does The Law State?
It is mandatory to renew the PUC certificate every year in case of four-wheelers and every six months in case of two-wheelers. If you are found without a valid PUC, you will have to pay fines at your nearest RTO. The RTO traffic fine for driving without a valid PUC certificate is Rs. 1000. For repeated offences, it is Rs. 2000. The charges for getting a PUC certificate is around Rs. 100, however, the exact cost depends on the type of vehicle you own. Hence, it’s important to renew your PUC certificate before its expiry date to avoid RTO fines and get a Vehicle Insurance.
From Where To Get A PUC Certificate?
Getting a PUC certificate is a simple process and won’t take more than a few minutes of your time. Most petrol pumps and special roadside vans offer PUC certification facilities. Once at the PUC station, you just have to switch on the engine for a few seconds. The PUC executives will check the pollution emission levels of your vehicle and check if it is in accordance with the legally permissible levels. If your PUC levels are in accordance with the numbers stated by law, you will receive your PUC certificate. Always make sure to keep a track of the expiry date of your PUC and renew it on time to avoid unnecessary fines and delay in insurance renewal.
