If there is one thing that is common around the world today, it is the brutal effect of Coronavirus. People all across the globe have severely been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. And unfortunately, the situation is getting difficult with each passing day. So far, there have been more than 2 lakh cases worldwide. While this puts immense stress on the World economy as a whole, it also exerts significant pressure on the healthcare system of all the Nations. Doctors all over the world are doing an extraordinary job by treating the patients with Coronavirus infection and trying to curb its effect. However, sometimes due to lack of adequate resources or government policies, required aid may not reach the patient on time, which can make things difficult.

India is currently one of the major coronavirus hotspots. Keeping this in mind, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is relentlessly carrying out research operations, providing statistical figures and setting guidelines in order to prevent the spread of the virus. Given the fact that the cases are increasing rapidly and testing of the patients at a larger scale is required, ICMR has requested price quotes by Covid-19 kit manufacturers. The number of antibody kits requested in the month of March was around 10 lakh. As per the reports, various kit manufacturers have been asked for the prices and timelines for the delivery. Along with this, the laboratories across countries have started work on using the kits based on ICMR guidelines. Also, while the process of importing kits began last month, work on creating our own testing kits is also in progress.

But the truth is that like most of the countries, India also lacks the required amount of testing kits. Also, people who have developed symptoms like cough, cold and fever are only being tested. Instead, mass testing and surveillance should be carried out across the country in order to detect symptoms and trace people with the infection. Also, some people have asymptomatic symptoms, and without testing, it is close to impossible to find such people. They instead pass on the infection to other people and the transmission continues. One more thing to consider is that monitoring people and quarantining the infected people, lockdown and social distancing, to some extent, has helped to wipe the menace of coronavirus from our Nation.

Another important point to consider here is the accuracy of the testing kits. Off late, ICMR has instructed Indian states to not go ahead with the rapid testing kits, a device to speed up the process of detecting Corona patients through their blood samples. This was done because the recent results have not been very accurate in terms of detection and ICMR are conducting tests to validate the accuracy.

This creates panic among people, who derive updates from news while locked at home and they refrain from visiting hospitals, medical centers. In addition, being one of the most populated countries, waiting in queues for a long time, inadequate facilities at hospitals, lax regulations make people more vulnerable to infections.

Along with having accurate testing kits, what is needed is proper infrastructure of hospitals and health care centers and well-equipped medical instruments in order to serve people better and curb the infection. While doctors are doing a commendable job in treating patients, it would be a great option for them to seek financial assistance to upgrade the infrastructure and much more.
