India’s 5 top-selling two-wheelers

India loves its two-wheelers and the love has only grown stronger with time. Bicycles, mopeds, scooters and motorcycles have been equally successful with each new generation. In 2017, India emerged as the world’s largest market for two-wheelers by displacing China to second place. India sold 17.7 million two-wheelers in 2016 compared to 16.8 units by China.

Rising incomes, easy two-wheeler loan availability and better roads have boosted sales of two-wheelers in India. But there’s also one big reason for the robust sales of two-wheelers in India. They are women and their love for gear less scooters. The introduction of gear less scooters have revolutionized the Indian two-wheeler segment. Gear less scooters have given tough competition to motorcycles sales in India, as they are popular with men and women, the young and the old alike.

The popularity of gear less scooters is evident from the fact that Activa, a gear less scooter brand from the Honda stable, was the No. 1 selling two-wheeler in a row for two consecutive years – Financial Year (FY) 2018 and Financial Year (FY) 2019. Here we present India’s five best selling two-wheelers for FY2019.

India’s 5 top-selling two-wheelers in 2019

  1. Honda Activa
  2. Hero Splendor
  3. Hero HF Deluxe
  4. Honda CB Shine
  5. Bajaj Pulsar

Honda Activa

It was a close finish this year for Honda Activa with its arch-rival Hero Splendor. Nevertheless, it was a win for Activa a second consecutive year. The gear less scooter brand was barely 2,716 units ahead of Honda Splendor in overall sales. India’s top-selling two-wheeler sold 3,008,334 units in 2019 compared to 3,154,030 units in FY2018. Though sales were down by 4.6% (YoY) Honda Activa still managed to regain first place this year.

Hero Splendor

Hero Splendor sold 3,005,618 units in FY2019 showing an increase of 9.95% over FY2018. With average daily sales of 8,234 units, the Hero Splendor could have easily surpassed Honda Activa if there was just one extra day in FY2019. Unfortunately, it was not a leap year and the Splendor had to settle for second place.

The Honda Activa and Hero Splendor have shown outstanding performance over the last few years. In FY2019 these two brands alone accounted for 28% of overall two-wheeler sales in India. That’s sheer dominance.

Hero HF Deluxe

Standing in a healthy third place is another product from the Hero Motocorp stable. The Hero HF Deluxe is an affordable, 100cc, fuel-friendly bike that has witnessed sustained sales in the rural and semi-urban MARKETS. In FY2019 it sold 2,168,740 units to finish third in the top-selling two-wheeler list. The HF Deluxe shows 15% year on year growth when compared to FY2018 sales figures.

According to ICRA, a rating agency, two-wheelers sales will witness a year-on-year growth of 8-10% in India. Rapid urbanization, more participation of women in the workforce, increase in income, as well as easy accessibility to two-wheeler loans, are fuelling a sustained demand for two-wheelers, both in rural and urban areas.

With online platforms such as Finserv MARKETS, you can apply for a two wheeler loan and upload documents from the comfort of your home. Honda CB Shine

The Honda CB Shine motorcycle found its way to 990,315 homes in FY2019; just a tad short of the 1 million mark. Honda had sold 987,271 CB Shines in FY2108. Though YoY growth was not significant, it still managed to secure fourth position in FY2019.

Bajaj Pulsar

You can safely say that Bajaj Pulsar was the biggest comeback of the year for any product, not just two-wheelers. From the 9th position in FY2018, it moved straight up to the 5th position in FY2019. Bajaj Pulsar registered total sales of 923,359 units, a stupendous increase of 40.48% over the last year.

Remember the time when Hero MotoCorp and Honda Motors were a single entity as a two-wheeler manufacturer? That was before 2010 when they decided to split. However, even after the split, they have held onto their leadership positions. While Honda Activa and Honda CB Shine share first and fourth positions respectively, there are four motorcycle brands in the top ten list that belongs to Hero MotoCorp. Take a look at the chart below.
