What is National Permit?

The Transport Department of every State Government provides the transporters a type of registration for the carriage of goods throughout India. This registration is called a National Permit or All India Permit. Two types of permits are issued by the State Governments for goods carriage; State Permit and National Permit. Using a State Permit, a vehicle can travel only in the State in which the permit was issued whereas a National Permit permits a vehicle to drive across India with a minimum of four States other than the State in which the permit was issued.

The fees applicable for authorisation of All-India Tourist Permit for other states with a minimum of two states being issued is determined by either the home state or the border.

Replacement of a Vehicle

  • The Indian government enables the owner of a vehicle to replace the vehicle with another of the same nature while keeping the permit intact.

  • When the vehicle owner chooses to register it during the replacement mode, he/she gets a 4-month period of replacement by the government.

  • This period starts from the date of deposit of the permit.

  • If the 4-month period expires, late charges are levied as follows:

Permit Renewal and Applicable Charges

  • A permit which is not a temporary or a special permit issued under subsection (8) of Section 88 is valid for 5 years.

  • The vehicle permit renewal fees are the same as the charges levied while issuing a new permit.

  • The applicant must submit the application (PRA) along with the All India permit renewal fees and other documents 15 days before the expiry of the permit. If the applicant fails to pay the fee by the due date, a late fee will be levied.
