Renewal of Permit and Charges Levied for it

All vehicle permits are valid for a period of 5 years. The only exceptions to this rule are if a temporary vahan permit has been issued or if a special permit has been issued under subsection (8) of Section 88.

The fees for renewal of a permit, even if you choose to get an online national permit, remain the same as the fees for issual of a new vehicle permit. It is essential to get the process started for renewal of your vehicle permit before it expires. The application for your vahan permit has to be submitted along with the fees and other requisite documents 15 days before your existing permit is due to expire.

If you are unable to have the permit renewed, you will be liable to penalties on the basis of your vehicle type.

Replacement of a Vehicle

If you have a permit for your vehicle but need or want to replace your vehicle, the government has provided for enough provisions to do so conveniently. You can hold onto the same permit even if you replace your existing vehicle with a vehicle of the same nature and type.

A four-month period is provided by the government for replacement of the vehicle once the owner of the vehicle has intimated their intention for replacement. The four-month period is considered from the day the permit fees have been deposited. However, if the four-month period expires without you correctly replacing the vehicle, there are fees you are liable to pay.
