Most of the EV owners like to charge their car at home. But many need to take their EV to charge ports. To find a nearby EV station, browse “car charging stations near me”

Here, we discuss everything related to the EV chargers.

What is an Electric Vehicle Charging Station?

An electric charging station is a place that facilitates you to connect your electric vehicle to a source of electricity so that you can recharge your car.

Sometimes a charging station is also known as electric vehicle supply equipment or EVSE. With the growing popularity of electric cars, many countries have started providing EVSE in municipal parking locations. You will find special EV chargers at these stations where you can recharge your vehicle using a range of electric charging connectors.

Types of EV Charging Stations in India

It is a simple process to charge your electric car. You just need to plug your car into a charger, which is connected to an electric circuit. If you are thinking that all the electric car charging stations or electric vehicle supply equipment are the same, then they are not. While some are installed simply by plugging into a standard plug, some EVSE needs a custom installation.

There can be many types of charging stations. Many are so advanced that they offer a host of additional features to the EV owners.

EVSEs (electric vehicle supply equipment, another name for electric car charging stations) can be categorized based on the speeds of charging. EV chargers can be one of these three main categories - Level 1 AC charging stations, Level 2 AC charging stations, and Level 3 DC Charging stations. Here we explain them one by one.

  • Level 1:

In the Level 1 car charging stations, it uses a 120 volt, alternating-current or AC plug, a specific circuit, and provides 2 to 5 miles of range per hour of charging. Level 1 chargers can be plugged into a standard outlet and it does not require any additional equipment installation. Level 1 chargers are the most inexpensive EVSE options. The drawback is it takes the most time to charge your car. The people using these types of chargers keep their cars on charge overnight.

  • Level 2:

In the Level 2 electric car charger, you get a 240 volt for residential or 208 V for commercial, AC plug, home charging, or public charging equipment, and a range of 10 to 60 miles for every hour of charging. Level 2 chargers are often used for both residential and commercial purposes. You cannot plug this charger into a standard outlet but it needs installation by a professional expert. This charger can charge an electric car in less than two hours.

  • Level 3:

In the Level 3 car charging, it uses a 480V, direct-current or DC plug, provides DC electricity to the battery through a special charging port, a range of 40 miles to 100 miles for every 10 to 20 minutes of charging, etc. These are also called DC fast chargers and are not compatible with many vehicles. They are mostly used in commercial and industrial applications and their installation needs specialized and high-powered equipment.

Wrapping It Up!

With soaring demand for EV and EV charging stations at the international level, in the future we can hope to have many more publicly-accessible charging car stations. The requirement for equipment supporting the high-charging at higher voltages is also going to arise, which is currently unavailable for many household points.

The governments, automobile manufacturers, and charging providers are prepping up to create a wider framework for electric vehicle charging stations.
