The automobile industry is one of the fastest-growing industries in India. An extensive number of vehicles are sold every day. Owing to these high vehicle sales and the burgeoning population, the vehicle registration process at RTO has increased tremendously.
Gujarat’s Commissionerate of Transport is responsible for issuing a driving licence in Gujarat to its citizens. A driving licence can be issued for a heavy vehicle, a four-wheeler, or a two-wheeler.
Depending on the class of motor vehicle that you drive, there are different types of driving licences that are issued by the RTO. Before providing a licence, the vehicles are classified into various classes. The driver’s licence is chiefly divided into 2 types: For personal use, and for commercial use. For personal use, the driver’s licence is divided into the following categories:
MC 50CC: For motorbikes of the capacity of 50cc or less
MCWOG/FVG: two-wheelers without gears

For commercial vehicles, the driver’s licence is divided into the following types:

HPMV/HTV: Heavy passenger motor vehicle/Heavy transport vehicle
Trailer: individual holding licence for Heavy transport vehicle can apply for a driver's licence for a trailer
Minimum 16 years of age to acquire a licence to drive a two-wheeler without gear
Minimum 18 of age to acquire a licence to drive a two-wheeler with gear, a four-wheeler, tractor, car, or a non-transport vehicle
Minimum 20 years of age to acquire a licence to drive a heavy transport vehicle
The RTO website of Gujarat (http://rtogujarat.gov.in/form.php) provides all the significant forms necessary for the application of a driving licence. They are available in both languages, English, as well as Gujarathi. The required documents are:

Driving licence in Gujarat can be acquired either by applying for DL online or at the RTO. A test slot can be booked online but a visit to the RTO office is mandatory in order to provide biometrics and take the test.

Here, choose ‘New Driving licence’
After carefully reading the steps, click ‘continue’
Next, add your demographics and other respective details like name, address, email ID, mobile number, RTO address, blood group, relation data, qualification, class of vehicle, date, and country of birth. Click ‘submit’
An application number will be received on your desktop as well as your phone number
Upload the documents mentioned above, your passport photographs, signature, verify them, click ‘submit’ and pay your fees.
To book a slot for your Driving licence exam, you need to submit your application number and date of birth.
After making the payment, print your application form and payment slip and carry it with you during the driving exam.
At your nearest RTO office, the application form can be filled and signed, ready for submission, along with the required documents and photographs. The forms can be pre-filled by downloading from the RTO website in order to save time.
The RTO officer will cross-check the data provided and will later inform you whether you’re eligible to take the test.
If you opt for a Smart Card Driver’s licence, you will be required to pay a fee of Rs. 200.
Once your appointment for the Driving licence exam is scheduled, your driving test will be conducted in the presence of a Motor Vehicle Inspector.
If you pass the test, the driving licence will be sent to your residential address within the stipulated time period.
If you do not pass the test, you will be asked to take the test again after 7 days.
The validity of 20 years is provided to the owner of the Driving licence. If one crosses the age of 50, the licence must be renewed. Some points to be remembered prior to driving licence renewal:
Once your driving licence expires, a grace period of 30 days is provided for renewal
You are required to furnish your medical certificate if your age is above 50 years of age
No Objection Certificate is mandatory if you have moved to, or from another state
The charges required to renew your licence is ₹50 (if renewed within 30 days). Additional late fees of ₹50 must be paid in case of delay. If you opt for Smart DL, a fee of Rs. 200 will be charged.
Only in case your driving licence is torn, stolen or misplaced, you can apply for a duplicate driver’s licence. Documents required to procure a duplicate driver’s licence are:

Copy of FIR in case the DL is stolen
A fee of ₹200 in case you require to change your name or address
If you wish to apply for an international driver’s license in Gujarat, you will have to follow these steps:
Submit form 1A and 4A to the RTO. Form 1A is the medical certificate and Form 4A is application form for an international driving licence
Submit copy of documents like existing driver’s licence, visa, passport and three passport size photographs
Pay fees of ₹500. You also cannot apply for an international driver’s licence online. You are required to meet the RTO in charge in person
You will then receive an International permit with a validity of 1 year
Renewal after expiry and duplication of international driver’s licence is not permitted
