State governments are responsible for building and maintaining roads in the state. To pay for the maintenance and upkeep of this infrastructure, they levy a road tax on all private and commercial vehicles. This tax varies for each state and also across vehicle categories.
The road tax in Uttar Pradesh (UP) for private vehicles is calculated as a percentage of the purchase value of the vehicle. For transport and commercial vehicles, it is a fixed amount based on the tonnage. This tax needs to be remitted in a timely manner, online on the UP Parivahan Road Tax, or by visiting the nearest RTO. The failure to do so can result in harsh penalties.
Nearly 80% of the roads across Indian states are constructed by the respective State Governments. So, road tax is levied by the State Government to provide for the cost of construction and maintenance of roads. Paying road tax enables the government to develop and maintain a better network of roadways. This, in turn, translates into better transportation facilities for citizens.
The State Government also uses the proceeds from the Uttar Pradesh road tax collection to provide security and emergency medical facilities. The amount and types of road tax, however, varies from one state to another.
With the introduction of the online road tax payment facility in Uttar Pradesh at the UP transport department’s website, you can pay the requisite tax before even starting your journey.

Section 3 of the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicle Taxation Act, 1962, mandates that all vehicles will pay UP road tax for the first time during registration. UP road tax is added to the ex-showroom price of vehicles during the process of registration. Following this, the vehicles are also required to pay other types of road taxes as per the existing rules. The UP road tax is calculated on the basis of the 3 different types of vehicles:
Two-wheeler
Four-wheeler for personal use
Four-wheeler for commercial use
If you fail to pay Uttar Pradesh road tax, you will be liable to pay a penalty of 4% of the unpaid tax amount for each month. This amount will not go beyond twice the actual unpaid road tax amount. In the case where you do not pay your lifetime road tax, you will be levied a penalty of 1/10th amount of the lifetime road tax for each year.
