State governments are responsible for building and maintaining roads in the state. To pay for the maintenance and upkeep of this infrastructure, they levy a road tax on all private and commercial vehicles. This tax varies for each state and also across vehicle categories.

The road tax in Uttar Pradesh (UP) for private vehicles is calculated as a percentage of the purchase value of the vehicle. For transport and commercial vehicles, it is a fixed amount based on the tonnage. This tax needs to be remitted in a timely manner, online on the UP Parivahan Road Tax, or by visiting the nearest RTO. The failure to do so can result in harsh penalties.

Why do States Levy Road Tax?

Nearly 80% of the roads across Indian states are constructed by the respective State Governments. So, road tax is levied by the State Government to provide for the cost of construction and maintenance of roads. Paying road tax enables the government to develop and maintain a better network of roadways. This, in turn, translates into better transportation facilities for citizens.

The State Government also uses the proceeds from the Uttar Pradesh road tax collection to provide security and emergency medical facilities. The amount and types of road tax, however, varies from one state to another.
