The government of India has taken a major decision regarding the Income Tax Return filing last date for the financial year 2020-21. The income tax due date for ITR filing for most individuals has been extended to December 31, 2021. Earlier, the income tax last date for ITR filing was September 30, 2021. The decision was announced by the Central Board of Direct Taxes on September 9. The deadline was extended because of the difficulties faced by the taxpayers and other stakeholders.
In a press release, the Central Board of Direct Taxes mentioned, “On consideration of difficulties reported by the taxpayers and other stakeholders in the filing of Income Tax Returns and various reports of audit for the Assessment Year 2021- 22 under the Income-tax Act, 1961(the “Act”), Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to further extend the due dates for filing of Income Tax Returns and various reports of audit for the Assessment Year 2021-22.” The ITR filing deadline was already extended from the usual deadline of July 31, 2021, because of the COVID-19 situation in the country.
The income tax due date for ITR filing has been extended for the individuals whose accounts are not required to be audited. According to the press release, "The due date of furnishing of Return of Income for the Assessment Year 2021-22, which was 31st July 2021 under sub-section (1) of section 139 of the Act, as extended to 30th September 2021 vide Circular No.9/2021 dated 20.05.2021, is hereby further extended to 31st December 2021”.
The government had extended the income tax last date of ITR filing in 2020 too. As of now, the deadline has been extended a total of four times- first, from July 31 to November 30, 2020, then to December 31, 2020. Later, it was pushed to January 10, 2021.
Meanwhile, the new income tax return filing portal has been facing several problems since its launch. Users have been complaining about the new ITR portal glitches and technical difficulties while using the portal in different stages. Some of the taxpayers even complained about interest and late fees being charged while doing their ITR filing after July 31, 2021, even though it was extended till September 30. These issues and the portal being slow made it difficult for the taxpayers to complete their ITR filing.
Along with this, the government has also extended its last date to file the belated/revised Return of Income by two months. The income tax due date for this is March 31, 2022, pushed from January 31, 2022. The CBDT has also extended various other deadlines related to ITR filing. Details about the same can be seen in the press release shared by the decision-making body.
