Importance of Linking PAN Card with Aadhaar Card

The PAN and Aadhaar are two unique ways of identifying an individual. The government of India has mandated that all individuals possessing both PAN and Aadhaar link them both before the due date of 31st March, 2023. There are many reasons why this mandate has been enforced by the government. Here’s an overview of a few of them.

  • It reduces the instances of multiple PAN cards

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a unique alphanumeric sequence. No two individuals can ever have the same PAN. Similarly, no single individual can ever have more than one PAN allotted to them.

However, it has been found that many individuals and entities with an intention to defraud the government have availed more than one PAN card. By quoting different PAN cards for different transactions, these unscrupulous entities are avoiding payment of tax.

When entities link an Aadhaar to a PAN card, the other unlinked PAN cards that they may possess become worthless, which ultimately reduces the instances of multiple PAN cards.

  • It prevents evasion of tax

When an individual or an entity completes the Aadhaar card and PAN card link, it becomes easier for the government authorities to keep a tab on the financial transactions being undertaken by them. Thanks to the detailed record of transactions, the instances of tax evasion can be reduced significantly.
