Types of Ration cards in Mizoram

Ration cards in Mizoram are classified into -

  • Ration Cards under NFSA (National Food Security Act)

The households that are covered under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Priority Household schemes in the state of Mizoram are issued ration cards under NFSA (National Food Security Act).

  • Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY)

The economically weaker families that are identified by the government are given the AAY ration cards. They get 35 kg of rice at Rs. 3/kg. Earlier, the percentage of the population included in the AAY scheme was as low as 5%. Only the people who were not able to manage two meals a day were included in this. Now the scope has been enhanced as now it also covers BPL families which are headed by widows, physically or mentally disabled individuals, terminally ill, or citizens above 60 years of age who have no other means of income support. The list of people to be included in AAY is made by the concerned village authorities. The AAY ration card is pink in color. These cards are not transferable.

  • Priority Household (PHH)

This is another classification of ration cards in Mizoram that focuses on individuals and households of vulnerable sections. Marginal farmers, landless workers, daily wage laborers, etc., of the unorganized sector, are all covered under this. The cardholders of this category get 8 kgs of rice monthly at  Rs. 3/kg that is sanctioned by the central government and 3 kgs rice at Rs.15/kg that the state government provides. The state officials identify the households to be considered under this scheme as per the criteria issued by the central government. The local authorities and village councils prepare the final Mizoram ration card list.

  • Non-NFSA Ration Cards

The Mizoram Civil Supplies department aims to provide essential commodities to all needy people. To ensure food security for all the people of the state, the government gives Non-NFSA ration cards to all those who are not included in the NFSA scheme. Under this category, individuals are provided with 8 kgs of rice at Rs. 15/kg.
