Link PAN with Aadhaar for income tax via the e-filing portal. Learn the steps, deadline, penalty charges for non-compliance, and other key details for smooth ITR filing.

Linking your Aadhaar and PAN for income tax purposes is now a mandatory compliance step for every Indian taxpayer. The Income Tax Department of India requires this linkage to validate tax filings, detect tax evasion, and streamline Direct Benefit Transfer. You can easily link your PAN card with your Aadhaar card for the income tax department using the official e-filing portal.

This procedure ensures that your PAN remains operative and allows you to file your Income Tax Return (ITR) without any issue. Here’s how you can link your Aadhaar and PAN for income tax e-filing online in just a few simple steps, without visiting any Government office.

Benefits of Linking PAN and Aadhaar

When you link Aadhaar and PAN for income tax purposes, it helps streamline your financial compliance and unlocks several practical benefits. The Income Tax Department of India encourages this integration to simplify processes, boost transparency, and prevent misuse of identity. Here’s how this supports both taxpayers and the Government:

  • Simplified ITR Filing

Once your Aadhaar and PAN are linked, filing your Income Tax Return becomes faster and error-free. You can e-verify returns easily without needing physical documents, saving time and effort.

  • Helps Prevent Identity Fraud

By linking your PAN card with Aadhaar card for the income tax department, identity duplication and tax-related fraud can be significantly reduced. It ensures that only valid individuals carry out high-value transactions.

  • Faster Access to Government Services

Aadhaar-linked PAN allows smoother access to Direct Benefit Transfers, subsidies, and other Government schemes. It ensures timely delivery of benefits without duplication or misallocation.

  • Seamless Financial Transactions

The linkage enables easier bank account openings, digital payments, and e-KYC. This makes activities like investing, borrowing, or insurance applications quicker and more secure.

  • Unified Financial Identity

Instead of managing multiple IDs, linking PAN and Aadhaar for income tax gives you a single financial identity. This simplifies account tracking and reduces paperwork across institutions.

  • Ensures Regulatory Compliance

Linking your Aadhaar with PAN keeps you aligned with Government regulations. It is now a legal mandate—failure to comply may result in a penalty or inoperative PAN status.

  • Boosts Financial Transparency

The linkage helps the authorities monitor large transactions and curb tax evasion. It builds a more accountable financial system and deters illicit activities.

  • Faster e-KYC Authentication

Linking PAN and Aadhaar facilitates digital KYC for opening accounts or applying for loans. This cuts down documentation and supports a faster, paperless process.

Is It Mandatory to Link Aadhaar and PAN for Income Tax

Yes, the Government of India requires every individual who holds a PAN and is eligible for an Aadhaar number to link Aadhaar and PAN for income tax purposes. This is mandated under Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, 1961.

The Income Tax Department of India issued a deadline of 30th June 2023 for existing PAN holders. From that date, PANs not linked to Aadhaar became inoperative. All eligible taxpayers must complete the process to ensure their PAN remains valid and compliant.

When is Aadhaar-PAN Linking Not Mandatory

A short exception list exists for individuals exempt from the mandatory linking requirement. These categories were outlined in CBDT’s Notification No. 37/2017, from 11th May, 2017:

  • A person who resides in Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, or Meghalaya.

  • A non‑resident (as per the Income-tax Act, 1961) who holds a PAN, unless they voluntarily choose to link it.

  • An individual aged 80 years or above at any time during the relevant tax year.

  • A person who is not a citizen of India, such as certain foreign nationals or OCIs.

Individuals in these exempt categories may still link their Aadhaar and PAN voluntarily, but the mandate does not apply to them.

Link After Logging In

  1. Log in to your account on the Income Tax e‑Filing portal. In your Profile section, choose ‘Link Aadhaar to PAN’.

  • Upon payment, you must re-submit the Aadhaar‑PAN linkage request via either the pre‑ or post‑login method above.

How to Check PAN and Aadhaar Link Status

To see if your PAN is linked with Aadhaar, the Income Tax Department offers two easy ways—before logging into the portal or after signing in.

Check via the e‑Filing Portal

  1. Visit the official Income Tax e‑filing portal (incometax.gov.in).

  2. In the Quick Links menu, click on ‘Link Aadhaar Status’.

  3. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number correctly, then select ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’.

  4. The portal will instantly display one of the following messages:

    • Linked successfully – your PAN and Aadhaar match

    • Link in progress – awaiting UIDAI verification

    • Not linked – prompting linkage if applicable

Check After Logging into the Portal

  1. Log in with your PAN, password, and captcha.

  2. From the Dashboard or My Profile section, select ‘Link Aadhaar Status.’

  3. If linkage is complete, your Aadhaar number will be visible; if not, the option to ‘Link Aadhaar’ or a status pending message will appear.

  4. If the portal reports a linking request is under validation by UIDAI, you may need to check again after a few hours or days.

Check PAN-Aadhaar Link Status via SMS

You can also verify whether your Aadhaar and PAN are connected using a mobile SMS:

  1. Open the SMS app on your Aadhaar‑registered mobile.

  2. Type your message in this format: UIDPAN <12‑digit Aadhaar number> <10‑digit PAN number>.

  3. Send to 567678 or 56161 as per the income tax department’s e-filing portal.

  4. You will promptly receive one of these replies:

    • ‘Aadhaar is already associated with PAN…’ – confirming linkage.

    • ‘Aadhaar is not associated with PAN…’ – indicating no linkage.

Things to Keep in Mind While Linking Your Aadhaar and PAN Card

Before you proceed to link Aadhaar and PAN for income tax, here are some key tips to help you reduce the risk of delays or errors:

  • Ensure Details Match Exactly

Name, date of birth and gender must be identical in your PAN Card and Aadhaar Card. Even minor spelling errors or discrepancies can cause the request to fail. If needed, update either record in advance.

  • Use Aadhaar-Registered Mobile Number

The OTP for verification is sent only to the phone number linked with Aadhaar. Make sure your mobile number is active and correctly linked before starting the process.

  • Link Before PAN Becomes Inoperative

The mandatory deadline was 30th June 2023. After that, PANs not linked to Aadhaar are treated as inoperative, leading to higher TDS, transaction restrictions, and invalid ITR filings. Avoid last-minute hassle by checking status early.

  • Check Status After 24 Hours

Once the linking request is submitted, it may take around 24 hours to reflect. You can verify via the e‑Filing portal or by SMS if the linking is successful.

  • Watch for Fraudulent Messages or Phishing

Do not respond to unsolicited emails or messages to ‘link PAN 2.0 and Aadhaar for e-filing’ claiming official income-tax assistance. Verify all links and portals before entering details.

  • Document the Confirmation

After successful linking, take a screenshot or download the confirmation message. Keep this for record‑keeping or in case of future TDS demand queries.

These considerations help you link PAN with Aadhaar for income tax smoothly and in full compliance with Government regulations, benefiting taxpayers with minimal risk.
