Frequently asked questions

How can I track the performance of a particular company’s stock?

You can track stock performance on online platforms through live market updates, historical charts, and news alerts. Regular analysis and stock alerts allow you to stay informed about significant price changes and events affecting the stock.

Stock investments carry market risks, including price volatility, economic shifts, and sector-specific issues. Managing risk can involve diversifying your portfolio, setting stop-loss orders, and staying informed about market trends to make timely decisions.

Market capitalisation, or market cap, is the total value of a company’s outstanding shares and is calculated by multiplying the stock price by the total shares. It classifies companies as large-cap, mid-cap, or small-cap, reflecting their size, stability, and potential risk level in the stock market.

Large-cap stocks are shares of companies with market capitalisation above ₹20,000 Crore. They are less risky due to financial stability and steady performance, though growth may be slower. These are ideal for investors prioritising consistent returns and low risk over aggressive capital appreciation.

Mid-cap stocks, with market capitalisation between ₹5,000 Crore and ₹20,000 Crore, balance growth and stability. They carry moderate risk, offering higher returns than large-caps but with more volatility. Investors seeking diversification with a medium risk tolerance could find mid-cap stocks suitable.

Small-cap stocks belong to companies with market capitalisation under ₹5,000 Crore. These stocks are high-risk but can deliver substantial returns due to growth potential. Investors with a long-term outlook and higher risk appetite may consider these for significant gains.

This guideline suggests exiting a stock if its price drops by roughly 7% from the purchase level. The aim is to limit losses and preserve capital.

A stock represents partial ownership in a company. When you hold it, you become a shareholder entitled to a share of profits and certain rights.

The 90% rule in stocks states that when 90% or more of all traded stocks move in the same direction, either up or down, it signals a strong, broad market trend. Such days often indicate high market conviction and can be used to assess trend strength.

It's possible through mutual funds or apps offering fractional investments. Direct stock purchases usually require more, as most shares trade above ₹10. Charges like brokerage and taxes may also apply.

In India, NSE and BSE hold regular trading sessions from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday to Friday, with a pre-open session from 9:00 AM to 9:15 AM.

Investors often examine a company’s earnings record, growth prospects, debt levels, management quality, and current valuation. These factors are typically weighed against individual investment objectives and risk tolerance.

Common stock provides voting rights and variable dividends. Preferred stock generally offers fixed dividends and priority in payouts, but usually lacks voting rights.

Stock prices can fluctuate due to market swings, economic changes, or company-specific problems. Managing risk may involve diversifying holdings, using stop-loss levels, and reviewing positions regularly.

Large-cap stocks belong to companies with high market value and strong market presence. They are often more stable but can still lose value during downturns.

Mid-caps offer a mix of growth potential and relative stability. They may outperform large-caps in some cycles but can be more volatile.

Small-caps are chosen for their potential to grow rapidly from a smaller base. However, they tend to have higher price swings and require closer monitoring.

Listing means making a company’s shares available for trading on an exchange like NSE or BSE, allowing public investors to buy or sell them.

A company must fulfil the exchange’s eligibility norms, submit required documents, and complete an IPO or similar process before its shares start trading publicly.
