What is Aadhaar PAN Delinking?

Your Aadhaar card and PAN card are important documents not only because they serve as Government-issued photo identification proofs but also because they are required for tasks as filing your Income Tax Return.

In 2017, the Government of India made it legally mandatory to quote either one's Aadhaar card number or Aadhaar enrolment number whilst filing an ITR and applying for a PAN card. Therefore, it became mandatory to link your Aadhaar card and PAN card.

However, if due to some valid reason, you need to delink your PAN and Aadhaar Card, then you can do so by following a specific process.

How Can You Delink Your Aadhaar Card from Your PAN Card?

You can opt to delink Aadhaar card from PAN card in the following scenarios.

1. When the same PAN number is issued to different individuals

You must follow the steps mentioned below.

  • Step 1: Collect the processing details of the PAN card from the PAN service provider.

  • Step 2: Request the identification of the initial and subsequent allottees of the PAN card.

  • Step 3: Ascertain whether the delinking of PAN card and Aadhaar card is required based on a detailed report.

  • Step 4: If the delinking of Aadhaar card and PAN card is required, submit the necessary documents to the Income Tax Department, Government of India.

  • Step 5: After the processing of the above application, the subsequent allottees of your PAN card shall be allotted a new PAN card to rectify the error.

2. If an assessee has two PAN cards and their Aadhaar Card is linked to a deactivated PAN card

In this scenario, the following steps must be followed.

  • Step 1: Run a CBN query on the Income Tax Department's mobile app to establish whether both of your PAN cards are active.

  • Step 2: If both the PAN cards are active, then you must ascertain whether they are already under the process of de-duplication. If they are, then the request must be addressed to your Income Tax Assessing Officer.

  • Step 3: Then, you must ascertain whether the delinking of Aadhaar card and PAN card is required.

  • Step 4: If you must delink PAN from Aadhaar, then you are required to submit the necessary documents to the Income Tax Department, Government of India.

3. If one assessee's PAN card is linked to another person's Aadhaar card

In this scenario, you must follow the steps mentioned below.

  • Step 1: Obtain the processing details of your PAN card from the PAN service provider.

  • Step 2: Collect the Audit Log from ITBA through the RCC.

  • Step 3: After the identification of the reason behind the wrong linking of PAN card and Aadhaar card, it must be decided whether delinking is required.

  • Step 4: If the delinking of PAN card and Aadhaar card is required, then you must submit the necessary documents to the Income Tax Department, Government of India.

Reasons to Delink Aadhaar Card and PAN Card

Here are the main reasons or conditions why it may be necessary to delink PAN from Aadhaar.

  1. The issuance of the same PAN to more than one assessee

  2. The issuance of more than one PAN card to one assessee

  3. Incorrect linking of one person's PAN card with another person's Aadhaar card

  4. An Aadhaar card linked with a PAN card that is fake or non-existent

  5. Technical issues preventing the linking of Aadhaar card and PAN card on the Income Tax e-filing portal
