The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a maternity social welfare program that was launched under the provisions of the National Food Security Act, 2013. It aims to tackle the issue of undernourishment in pregnant women and women who have just delivered babies.
PMMVY provides cash incentives in three instalments to pregnant women and lactating mothers, worth a total of ₹5,000. The first incentive of Rs. 1,000 is paid out on early registration of the pregnancy at approved health facilities. After this, the remaining amount is provided in equal instalments of ₹2,000 each.
The PM Matru Vandana Yojana aims to provide partial compensation for the wages lost during pregnancy. Due to the cash incentives available under the PMMVY scheme, pregnant women and lactating mothers can get sufficient rest before and after the birth of their first child. Furthermore, the plan also strives to improve the health-seeking behaviour amongst pregnant women.
All Pregnant Women (PW) and Lactating Mothers (LM), except for the ones under regular employment with the State Government, Central Government or Public Sector Undertaking. Or PW & LM who are receiving similar benefits under any other law in force.
Eligible PW & LM who have their pregnancy after or on January 1, 2017, for their first child.
Pregnant and lactating Anganwadi Workers (AWW), Anganwadi Helpers (AWH) and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA).
In case of stillbirth or miscarriage, the beneficiary shall receive the PMMVY benefits only once. Thus, the PW & LM can claim the remaining instalments in the event of future pregnancies.
In the event of infant mortality, no further benefits shall be available for future pregnancies as the beneficiary has received all the instalments under the PMMVY scheme.
Here are some key advantages of being covered under the PM Matru Vandana Yojana:
The beneficiary is eligible to receive cash incentives under the PMMVY yojana. Here, the incentive is given in three instalments in the following way:
Incentive of ₹1,000 is provided on early registration of the pregnancy at the Anganwadi Centre (AWC) or any approved health facility recognised by the State or Union Territory.
Incentive of ₹2,000 is given after six months of pregnancy on completing at least one antenatal check-up.
Incentive of ₹2,000 is given after the registration of childbirth and completion of the first cycle of vaccinations such as OPV, BCG, DPT and Hepatitis B.
The eligible beneficiaries shall receive an additional incentive of ₹1,000 under the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) for institutional delivery. Hence, the beneficiaries shall get a total maternity benefit of ₹6,000 under the PMMVY and JSY scheme.
Here are the PM Matru Vandana Yojana eligibility criteria that an applicant must fulfil:
