Overview

The new portal for income tax e-filing was launched on 7th June 2021 by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). This portal has replaced the existing income tax portal where taxpayers used to file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and perform other tax-related activities. It is an updated platform that has been designed to ensure a seamless and hassle-free experience for a taxpayer.

A Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number i.e., TAN is issued to individuals who will be collecting or deducting tax on payments they make under 1961’s Income Tax Act. It is a very crucial number as a TAN is used for all TDS/TCS certificates, payment challans, TCS/TDS returns, and more.

By registering for TAN, you can:

  • Download e-TDS and TCA consolidated statements for the quarter to prepare a correction statement

  • View status of all the statements that have been filed to date

  • Gain access to other functions related to the TCS and TDS statements

Preparation for TAN Registration

It is important to register TAN online as the benefits to both the collectors and deductors are manifold. Above all, it also makes your e-filing easier and smoother. However, before you read up on how to register tan on income tax site, here is everything you must have handy:

  1. PRN i.e., Provisional Receipt Number of any eTDS statement that you have previously filed.

  2. Your PAN details

  3. On the TRACES website, go to ‘Quarterly Statement Status’, enter your PRN and TAN to know whether that particular statement is accepted by TIN and keep that statement ready during your registration.

How to Register TAN on the New Income Tax Portal?

To get started with your TAN registration, visit the TRACES website.

  1. On the TRACES homepage, click on ‘Continue’.

  2. Next, click on ‘Register as a New User’ and select ‘Deductor’ under the user type to proceed.

  3. You can now provide your TAN and then fill in the Captcha code to proceed.

  4. You will get an option to choose a communication address as per the TAN master and an option to fill in the mobile number, email ID, etc., accordingly.

  5. Your form type, financial year and KYC quarter will be auto-populated, post which, you can manually enter your token number of the regular statement.

  6. Next, you need to fill in the organisation details of the deductor like the PAN, deductor category, DOB of the authorized person, etc. If you are a government deductor, PAN details may not be mandatory.

  7. Now the deductor can create a user ID and password.

  8. At the confirmation screen, the deductor is still allowed to edit details before clicking on ‘Confirm’ to successfully register on the TRACES income tax portal.

You will receive an activation link with a code on your email and mobile number. After successful activation, the details of registration will be shared within the next 48 hours.
