About Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX)

Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) is the first commodity derivatives exchange in India. This platform allows buyers and sellers to trade various types of commodities. It started its operations in 2003, and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) governs it. 

 

MCX is similar to other exchanges like the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE). It sells commodity derivative contracts across various categories. MCX deals in various segments, including bullion, metals, energy and agricultural commodities.

What are the MCX Trading Hours?

MCX allows trading in some specific hours. Here are the timings for various sessions:

1. Normal Session

Normal trading sessions run between Monday and Friday from 09:00 AM to 11:30 PM. 

 

Note that MCX allows future trading of agricultural commodities only up to 5:00 PM. Trading for other commodities, including Bullions, Metals and Energy products, is allowed up to 11:30 PM / 11:55 PM. As per SEBI guidelines, International referenceable Agri-commodities are available up to 09:00 PM.

2. Special Session

Special sessions for trading run between Monday and Friday from 8:45 AM to 8:59 AM. These special sessions are order cancellation sessions. They deal with the cancellation of pending orders before the market opens.

MCX has maximum holidays in March 2024. The market will remain closed because of Maha Shivaratri, Holi and Good Friday.

If there is a holiday on Sunday, will the market be closed on Monday?

The rule states that if a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday will be open for traders as decided.

Is New Year's Eve considered an MCX Holiday?

No, New Year's Eve is not considered an MCX holiday. Only New Year's Day is a holiday for traders.
