Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) is the first commodity derivatives exchange in India. This platform allows buyers and sellers to trade various types of commodities. It started its operations in 2003, and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) governs it.
MCX is similar to other exchanges like the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE). It sells commodity derivative contracts across various categories. MCX deals in various segments, including bullion, metals, energy and agricultural commodities.
The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) offers a diverse range of commodities for trading, categorised into four key types:
Bullion includes precious metals like gold and silver, which are popular among investors for their value stability and use as a hedge against inflation. These commodities attract both long-term investors and short-term traders, especially during periods of economic uncertainty.
Base metals such as copper, aluminium, zinc, lead, and nickel are widely used in industrial applications. Their prices often reflect global economic health, making them a vital component of MCX trading for those looking to capitalise on industrial growth and demand.
The energy category includes commodities like crude oil and natural gas, which are crucial for global energy markets. These products are highly volatile, offering opportunities for traders to benefit from price fluctuations driven by geopolitical events, supply-demand dynamics, and seasonal changes.
MCX also offers trading in agricultural commodities such as cotton, cardamom, and mentha oil. These products are influenced by factors like weather conditions, harvest cycles, and government policies, making them an interesting choice for traders with a keen understanding of the agri-market.
MCX allows trading in some specific hours. Here are the timings for various sessions:
Normal trading sessions run between Monday and Friday from 09:00 AM to 11:30 PM. Note that MCX allows future trading of agricultural commodities only up to 5:00 PM. Trading for other commodities, including Bullions, Metals and Energy products, is allowed up to 11:30 PM / 11:55 PM. As per SEBI guidelines, International referenceable Agri-commodities are available up to 09:00 PM.
Special sessions for trading run between Monday and Friday from 8:45 AM to 8:59 AM. These special sessions are order cancellation sessions. They deal with the cancellation of pending orders before the market opens.
Note that the same session timings will be applicable for the calendar year 2025.
MCX has maximum holidays in April 2025. The market will remain closed because of Maha Shivaratri, Holi and Good Friday.
The rule states that if a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday will be open for traders as decided.
No, New Year's Eve is not considered an MCX holiday. Only New Year's Day is a holiday for traders.
The MCX morning sessions are held between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, while the evening sessions are conducted between 5:00 PM and 11:55 PM.
