The Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP), on September 1, 2026, withdrew their call for a march on September 5, 2026, after ‘assurances’ given by the Centre over withdrawal of FIRs in connection with the NEET-UG paper leak protests in Delhi in July.
CJP co-convenor Saurav Das appeared before a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana to inform the court about the decision. Saurav Das stated that, owing to the assurances given by the government to withdraw the FIRs and work out the modalities of the compensation scheme for victims of the July 20 police crackdown, the CJP ‘deems it appropriate to withdraw the march scheduled for September 5, 2026’.
During today’s hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Central Government, urged the SC to facilitate the closure and quashing of FIRs filed against students who participated in protests between July 20 and July 25 across several parts of the country. He told the bench that the Centre is committed to honour the assurance given to the CJP leaders and provide compensation to the families of students who ended their lives after the cancellation of the NEET exam. Mehta further told the court that it will pay compensation to families of the students who died and sought three months to work out the modalities.
On August 24, the CJP had announced the September 5 march from India Gate to the New Delhi Police Headquarters over the Centre’s alleged failure to honour the promises made during the Delhi protests, particularly those related to the withdrawal of FIRs against the demonstrators. The protesters had claimed that several commitments made at the time, particularly those relating to FIRs and written assurances, had not been fulfilled.
