The Government of India launched the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme to enhance farmer income and provide irrigation sources. In March 2019, the PM-KUSUM Yojana received administrative clearance, and guidelines were drafted in July 2019. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) launched this programme to encourage the installation of solar pumps and other renewable energy plants across the country. This concept is broken down into three parts, each of which is detailed in more detail below.
Farmers, farmer organisations, panchayats, and co-operative societies can apply for a solar pump under the Pradhan Mantri KUSUM Yojana. The overall cost of this scheme is broken down into three areas, each of which the government will assist farmers with. Farmers will receive a 60 percent subsidy from the government. Farmers will only be required to contribute 10% of the project's overall cost. Farmers can sell the electricity generated by the solar panels. Money earned from the sale of power might be utilised to launch a new business.
The following are the PM KUSUM scheme benefits:
Provides farmers with a risk-free source of revenue
Capacity to prevent overexploitation of groundwater
Ensures that farmers have access to power at all times.
Aids in the decrease of agriculture's carbon footprint.
Reduces the burden of farm power subsidies on farmers.
Under this concept, workers will build 10,000 MW of grid-connected decentralised renewable energy power plants on barren land.
Farmers, cooperatives, farmer organisations, panchayats, Water User Associations (WUA), and Farmer Producer Organizations will construct these networks (FPO)
Within a 5-kilometer radius of the substation, power projects will be built.
Farmers would be helped to install stand-alone solar agriculture pumps worth Rs. 17.50 Lakhs under this scheme.
The pumps, which will have a horsepower rating of up to 7.5, will be utilised to upgrade current diesel farming pumps.
Although the capacity can be greater than 7.5 HP, financial assistance will only be granted up to that point.
This scheme aims to solarize 10 Lakh grid-connected agriculture pumps, with individual farmers receiving assistance to solarize pumps that are already linked to the grid.
Extrasolar power will be sold to India's distribution companies (DISCOMs) at a predetermined price.
Solar energy will be used to meet the irrigation needs of farmers.
The test run of Component A and Component C for a capacity of 1000 MW and 1 Lakh pumps is the initial step.
Components A and C will be employed for increased capacity and pumps following the successful deployment of a sample run.
Capacity has been sanctioned to various State Government Agencies based on demand.
Tendering or allocation for Components A and C shall be done by the implementation agency appointed by the state governments for those components.
For the years 2021-2022, the following is a tabular depiction of component-by-component specifics of sanctions and state Implementing Agencies:

The Indian government has created a new programme called KUSUM to help farmers install solar irrigation pumps on their properties. This scheme will provide farmers with a 60% subsidy for installing pump sets and tube wells on their land.
In the country, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has created the PM KUSUM Scheme for farmers to install solar pumps and grid-connected solar and other renewable energy facilities.
Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan is the full form of KUSUM.
In March 2019, the PM-KUSUM plan received administrative clearance, and rules were prepared in July 2019.
This programme intends to supply Indian farmers with low-cost solar irrigation pumps, allowing them to reduce their reliance on diesel-powered grids.
The state government will pay a 30% subsidy, while the farmer will be responsible for the remaining 40%.
