The first solar PV module manufacturing unit of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) in Jamnagar, Gujarat, is scheduled to commence operations in 2025. The development signifies a key milestone in Reliance’s plan to achieve net-zero emissions by the year 2035.
The Jamnagar facility is designed as a completely integrated solar manufacturing hub. It covers the entire solar PV value chain, including:
Polysilicon production
Ingot and wafer manufacturing
Solar cell fabrication
Assembly of finished solar modules
Glass production for modules
This integration aims to boost domestic manufacturing capabilities in line with India’s renewable energy ambitions.
The beginning phase of the facility aims for a yearly output capacity of 10 gigawatts (GW) of solar modules. Reliance plans to increase this capacity to 20 GW in the following phases, positioning itself as a major player in the Indian and global solar markets.
Apart from the solar module production, Reliance is expanding its renewable energy ecosystem with battery and micro power electronics manufacturing facilities expected to become operational by next year. This advancement supports the company’s broader clean energy strategy.
Reliance’s solar manufacturing initiative directly supports India’s national target of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power production by 2030. The timing is critical as the government mandates that all renewable energy ventures must use solar PV modules created in India starting June 2026 — a move designed to promote self-reliance and local industry growth.
Reliance’s significant investments in the clean energy ecosystem reflect a strategic pivot towards sustainability. The company is setting itself up as the main provider in India’s transition to a greener energy future, supporting government policies and global climate goals.
Reliance Industries Ltd’s entry into solar PV module manufacturing marks a pivotal development in India’s renewable energy landscape. With ambitious capacity goals and a fully integrated manufacturing approach, Reliance is poised to contribute meaningfully to the country’s clean energy transition while aligning with global sustainability trends.
