In the context of using the intricate Income Tax Portal, you must first consider what the new income tax portal is. In India, the original e-filing website was previously www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. Since June 7, 2021, the new version of the website has been operational for taxpayers, i.e., www.incometax.gov.in.
Reportedly, the Income Tax Portal 2.0 is a more user-friendly model of the original website. It has beneficial upgrades related to Income Tax Return filing and management. The process is smoother to handle, and the platform delivers different levels of tax-related services in the new version.

The Income Tax Department of India launched a system in October 2019 through which you can check the validity of your income tax notice via the e-filing portal. For this, you must know and utilise data like the Assessment Year (AY), PAN number, month and year of the notice issue, and notice section.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) released a circular in August 2019 related to this matter. The report stated that you (the applicant) must consider the Document Identification Number (DIN) to understand and verify your notice. The DIN would appear on the order or notice. This verification strategy has been operational since October 1, 2019.
Additionally, Nirmala Sitharaman, the Finance Minister, added that the regulation where you cannot make any interaction regarding your governmentally issued notice without using the computer-generated DIN. This step is essential to ensure total transparency during notice checking via the income tax portal.

Regarding how to check notices in the income tax portal, the following are manners of checking the income tax orders or notices.
Step 1: Sign-up or log in to the e-filing website.
Step 2: Open the “My Account” section through the top menu on the home page. Choose the option “View e-Filed Returns/Forms” from the drop-down list that appears.
Step 3: Press the cursor on the “Ack. No.” section of the relevant Assessment Year.
Step 4: If you see one of the following messages, you need to edit your return notice.
ITR filed is defective/Incomplete
Pending response to the proposal of adjustment U/S 143(1)(a)
ITR Processing completed and demand determined
Get a copy of the notice through the spam or inbox folder of your registered email address. The portal would send an email in any of the above cases with an attachment (sender ID: DONOTREPLY@incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in). Otherwise, you can call 1800-103-4455 (CPC) for a notice copy request.
To get the income tax notice for any other Assessment Year, perform these steps.
Select “My Account”
Click on the “Service Request” option
Opt for the relevant Request type
Choose the notice Request Category, like Intimation u/s 143(1)
Step 1: Open the income tax portal and access your account.
Step 2: You would see the “Notice/Order issued by ITD” hyperlink right on the left pane. Click on it.
Step 3: The platform would direct you to the next page; here, all applicants notice two choices for validating the Income Tax Order/Notice.

Step 4: If you choose option (b) for notice authentication, the screen shows entry fields for the DIN and captcha code. Select “Submit” after filling the page with the correct information. Then, check for the validity of the notice.
Step 5: In case you choose the (a) route, you have to enter details like the month and the year of issue, notice section, assessment year, PAN, and captcha code. Then, choose "Submit" to check for the notice validity.
Step 1: Read through the information carefully.
Step 2: Some problems in the ITR data might result in the issue of notice; check if that applies to you.
Step 3: Verify the basic information available on the notice to ensure that it belongs to you. Here, check the name given, Mobile Number, PAN card number, and email ID, among other ID-related questions.
Step 4: Consult with tax experts.
Step 5: Provide your response within the specified time; this is important to avoid any actions or penalties.
Step 1: Assess that all the necessary KYC details are accurate. E.g., PAN, applicant name, and address in the Intimation Notice.
Step 2: Verify that the details in the income tax notice are the same as your ITR data.
Step 3: In case there were any tax deductions in your ITR, assess these details.
Step 4: Check the tax-saving and income details given in two visible columns; see the numbers for both are the same.
Step 5: Also read through extra details to see that the information is accurate. These include the net taxable income-related tax liability, filing fees (Section 234F), total income tax liability, tax relief if available, and interest under Sections 234C/234B/234A.
Applicants get the Section 143(1) intimation notice inside a one-year period from the end of the specified Financial Year (FY) for the return filing. Those who do not get an intimation notice can make do without any modifications in the return filed or the tax liability or the refund.
