In 2025, the National Stock Exchange of India has declared 18 holidays across capital markets, derivatives, and commodity segments, based on the official NSE holiday calendar.
A trading holiday is when the stock exchange remains fully closed, and no buying or selling of securities is allowed. On a clearing holiday, however, trading is permitted, but the clearing corporation does not process settlements. This means executed trades are settled on the next working day.
A settlement holiday trade refers to any trade executed on a day when the clearing and settlement process is not operational. While trading is allowed, the transfer of funds or securities is postponed to the next clearing day.
An NSE clearing holiday is a day when NSE Clearing Limited does not process trade settlements. Even though trades can be executed on that day, their settlement is deferred to the next business day when the clearing system resumes operations.
A settlement holiday occurs when either the clearing corporation, depositories, or banking partners are closed, preventing the completion of trade settlements. Trades placed on such days are settled once the system reopens, usually on the next working day.
