How to Block a Lost SBI Credit Card

Blocking the lost card is your first defence against unauthorised transactions, and SBI Card provides multiple channels for doing this.

  • Through the Official Website

Log in to sbicard.com, go to the 'Request' or relevant service section. Choose to block the lost card and raise a reissue/replace request in the same flow.

Use the SBI Card app, select the lost card under 'Reissue/Replace Card' from the 'Service Request' menu. Submit the details to initiate the blocking of your existing credit card.

  • Calling the IVR Helpline

You can call the 24x7 helpline numbers and follow the automated menu to block your card instantly when reported as lost or stolen.

  • Sending an SMS (Quick Blocking)

You can send an SMS in the format BLOCK XXXX (where XXXX is the last 4 digits of your card) to 5676791 from your registered mobile number to block your card.

Confirmation for Blocked Credit Card

Once you have completed the block request through any channel, the card is treated as blocked for further usage. You may receive a confirmation through SMS or on‑screen message, and you can then proceed to request a replacement card so that your card services continue with a new number and plastic.

Other Methods

If you are not able to use digital channels, you still have alternative options.

  • Email:

You may write to SBI Card using the customer service email ID customercare@sbicard.com, as mentioned on the official website. Here, you can explain your scenario and request a reissue /or replacement card against the lost or stolen card.

  • Call:

You can also call the SBI Card helpline numbers 1860 180 1290 or 39 02 02 02 (prefix local STD code). Ask customer service to place a reissue request after blocking your card.

Charges & Timeline for Replacement Credit Card

There is a reissue or replacement fee applicable when you request for a duplicate card. This typically falls in the range of about ₹100 to ₹250 plus taxes for most cards. Note that this can go up to ₹1,500 for certain premium variants.

Once your request is accepted, a new card is usually dispatched within seven working days. However, it might take a little longer depending on your location and courier timelines. So, it might be better to plan your spends and payments accordingly until the new card arrives.

Liability for Fraudulent Transactions

If an unauthorised (fraudulent) transaction appears on your card, it can be useful to know who is liable, how it is structured, and other details:

A. When You are Not Liable (Zero Liability)

  • Suppose the unauthorised transaction happened because of a fault outside both you and SBI Card. For example, there was a third-party system breach. Then, you will not have to pay anything, provided you notify SBI Card promptly.

  • If you tell SBI Card about the issue within 3 working days of receiving their communication about the transaction, they will treat you as having zero liability.

B. When Your Liability is Limited

  • If the problem is neither your fault nor SBI Card’s, but you delay reporting it, you may still have to pay a limited amount.

  • If you report the unauthorised transaction 4 to 7 working days after receiving SBI Card’s communication, your liability per transaction will be capped as follows:

    • If your card’s credit limit is ₹5 Lakhs or less: Your maximum liability is up to ₹10,000.

    • If your card’s credit limit is more than ₹5 Lakhs: Your maximum liability is up to ₹25,000.

C. When You are Fully Liable

  • If the loss happened because of your own negligence, you will be responsible for the full loss. For example you shared card details, PIN, CVV or OTP, or your device was compromised by malware, phishing or SIM compromise.

  • Also, if you wait more than 7 working days to report an unauthorised transaction after SBI Card contacted you, you will be required to bear the entire loss.

What to Do Immediately

  • Block your card as soon as you notice anything suspicious using the various methods discussed earlier.

  • Once SBI Card receives your blocking request, they will take steps to stop further unauthorised transactions.

  • Any loss that happens after you report the unauthorised transaction will be borne by SBI Card.

Extra Note

  • SBI Card may, at its own discretion, decide to compensate you more than the limits shown above. That is a goodwill option that they can choose to exercise case by case.

FAQs on Lost SBI Credit Card

What should I do first if my SBI credit card is lost?

If your SBI credit card is lost or stolen, immediately report it to SBI Card so the card can be blocked to prevent unauthorised transactions. You can do this through the official website, mobile app, helpline call or SMS from your registered mobile.

You can block your lost or stolen SBI credit card instantly by logging in to sbicard.com, using the SBI Card mobile app, or calling the 24×7 helpline. You can also send an SMS with BLOCK XXXX to 5676791 from your registered number. Confirmation will be sent by SMS or email once the card is successfully blocked.

You can get your SBI credit card reissued by visiting SBI’s official website and logging into your net banking account using your credentials. Under the ‘Request’ section, find and click the ‘Reissue/Replace Card’ option. You will be prompted to select your current credit card number, and you must select the credit card and click ‘Submit’.

After blocking your lost card, you can request a replacement (reissue) through the SBI Card website, mobile app, helpline or email by selecting the ‘Reissue/Replace Card’ option. The replacement card is generally dispatched to your registered address, typically within about 7 working days.

SBI Card typically charge a replacement/reissue fee (commonly around ₹100-₹250 plus applicable taxes) for a lost or stolen card that is replaced. The fees may vary by card variant, so check the specific terms applicable to your card before applying for a replacement.

Simply losing a credit card and blocking it should not directly affect your credit score. This holds true if you continue to manage the account responsibly and pay dues on time. However, any missed payments or overdue balances on the account can negatively impact your credit history and score.

Once the request to block your SBI credit card is submitted, it is verified by the bank authorities. Upon verification, a notification will be sent to your registered number and email ID confirming that the SBI card is blocked.

You can call SBI Card’s toll free number 1860 180 1290 to block your credit card with IVR’s (Interactive Voice Response) guidance.

Once your credit card has been blocked, you’ll receive a confirmation email and/or SMS from SBI Cards. If you do not receive a confirmation message, get in touch with the issuer’s customer service team.

You’ll most likely receive your replacement credit card within 7 days of placing your order. However, it may take longer depending on your location.
