If you happen to be in New York City in the fall, the New York Comedy Festival is a must-visit. The comedy scene in New York is way ahead of its time and some of the best comedians in the world have emerged from it.

What is the New York Comedy Festival?

The New York Comedy Festival is a week long celebration of comedy that started in 2004. It was co-founded by Caroline Hirsch and Jarrod Moses. Caroline is the owner of the comedy club Carolines on Broadway. This year, it features more than 100 shows by more than 200 comedians at venues across New York City. This year, it is from Monday, November 4 to Sunday, November 10. It is taking place at more than 20 venues across the five boroughs of NYC. If you are wondering why you should visit this festival on your New York holiday, we can give you multiple reasons.

The line-up

Every year, the festival has a line-up featuring some of the most popular comedians and artists. This year, the line-up features Trevor Noah of Daily Show fame, Stephen Colbert, Nate Bargatze, Nick Kroll, Hasan Minhaj and many others.

New York City

Of course, you wouldn’t go to New York just for the festival. The city and its many attractions are worth exploring. You might have to plan a long trip if you want to make the most of the comedy festival and of New York City as well. New York is one of the leading cities in the world for art, fashion, food, and theatre. The skyscrapers and the skyline are a breathtaking sight. Central Park, Times Square, Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan are few of the major places to check out. This is the city where some of your favourite movies and TV shows were shot.

5 boroughs tour

New York City is divided into five different regions called boroughs. A lot of people visit Manhattan and leave out the other four boroughs, but they miss out on a lot of interesting things. The New York Comedy Festival is spread over all five boroughs, ensuring you visit them all and check out popular clubs and other locations all across. The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx Zoo, and Brookyln are a few sights to check out.

Vir Das

This year’s lineup features our very own Vir Das as well. He has been doing stand up comedy and comedy shows in India for a long time and has also acted in some films. If you happen to be in New York for the festival, make sure you watch him live.

Lesser known comedians

There are many acts on the line-up which you must have already followed, seen or heard of. But the great thing about the festival is that you also get to explore new, lesser-known acts which you wouldn’t have found out otherwise. For example, this year features Butterboy with Jo Firestone, Aparna Nancherla, and Maeve Higgins. You can check them out and see the amazing work they’ve been doing. You probably wouldn’t have another opportunity to watch them on such a big stage.

A lot of comedians record their specials and acts at the New York Comedy Festival. This year, Popular comedian and podcaster Mike Cannon is taping a comedy special at the Village Underground this year. Being a part of a special act and then watching it on screen months later is quite a fantastic experience!

Comedy and the arts

The festival isn’t just about stand-up comedy. There are other art forms integrated as well. There are storytelling acts, short films, musicals, documentaries, and even panel discussions worth checking out. This year even features a comedy basketball game by Canada’s Comedy Records.

The venues

The festival is spread all over the city in such a way that you can plan your New York holiday around the festival venues. It features some of the prominent venues for comedy in the city.

There is, of course, Carolines on Broadway which is owned by the founder of the festival. And then there is Gotham Comedy Club, Madison Square Garden, The Secret Loft, Broadway Comedy Club to name a few.

Now that you have so many reasons to visit the New York Comedy Festival, you might want to plan a spontaneous trip. Worried about how to make arrangements like insurance?
