In India, April 30 is celebrated as Ayushman Bharat Diwas to uplift the ideals of the Government of India’s Ayushman Bharat Yojana. The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) or Ayushman Bharat Yojana aims to make healthcare accessible and affordable to around 50 crore economically backward Indian citizens.

What is Ayushman Bharat Scheme

The Government of India introduced the Ayushman Bharat Scheme in 2018 with the motive to provide affordable and accessible healthcare facilities for the deprived sections of the country. The families that are eligible and registered under the PMJAY scheme receive a health insurance cover of ₹5 Lakhs every year, which covers pre-hospitalisation expenses for three days and post-hospitalisation expenses for 15 days. Moreover, it also covers around 1,400 procedures and all other related costs like OT expenses.

The PMJAY scheme or Ayushman Bharat Yojana ensures that eligible citizens are provided with top-notch medical facilities at thousands of empanelled private and government hospitaals via their Ayushman card or e-card. Approximately 23,311 hospitals have been empanelled under the scheme as of September 6, 2020.

COVID Treatment Cover under Ayushman Bharat Yojana

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the beneficiaries of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana are also provided with financial cover for the testing and treatment of COVID-19. The respective State Governments will cover costs for the treatment of the PMJAY beneficiaries in both public and private hospitals.

Who is Ayushman Mitra

An Ayushman Mitra is a certified frontline healthcare professional who is present at each hospital or healthcare centre that is empanelled under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. The Ayushman Mitra serves as the first point of contact for the beneficiaries of this scheme.

The Ayushman Mitra is appointed under an employment initiative under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. Under this initiative, almost 1 Lakh Indian youth will be appointed as Ayushman Mitras in private and government hospitals, leading to the generation of employment in the country. These Ayushman Mitras will receive a fixed salary based on the minimum wages in their respective states.

Chatbot Assistance for PMJAY Beneficiaries

To help eligible citizens avail the benefits of the PMJAY scheme, the government has now introduced an 'Ask Ayushman' chatbot on WhatsApp. This AI-enabled chatbot assistant allows the beneficiaries to get information on various aspects of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. This includes the benefits and features of the scheme, finding the nearest PMJAY empanelled hospital, the process of applying for an e-card, etc. The chatbot can comprehend and respond in Hindi and English, and also offers a text-to-speech feature for its users.

Conclusion

The Ayushman Bharat Yojana or Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) is a great initiative by the Government of India to provide affordable healthcare facilities to the low-income sections of our country. However, if you are not eligible under this scheme, you must ensure that you buy a comprehensive health insurance plan for yourself and your loved ones.
