The New Income Tax Portal with a new design provides greater convenience to taxpayers. It was unveiled on May 20, 2021. The new portal is used to complete all tax-related duties like filing their income tax returns (ITR). The portal can also be used to request refunds and file grievances, in addition to filing ITRs. Further, the site is used by the Income Tax Department to share responses from taxpayers who have questions. All correspondence about penalties, exemptions, and appeals are also done through the new portal.
Income tax returns can be filed through both online and offline means.
The process to file and submit an ITR via the online medium is as follows:
Go to e-File > Income Tax Returns > File Income Tax Return on the portal
Select ‘Assessment Year’, ‘Filing Type’, and ‘Status’
If you're certain about the ITR type, click on ‘Continue’; otherwise, select ‘Proceed’ to find your ITR
Once you've chosen an ITR, choose a reason for filing, fill out the required fields on the ITR and pay, if necessary
To submit your return, go to ‘Preview’ and then ‘Submit’
Click the ‘Continue to Verification’ button
Select a mode for verification
For e-verification, enter EVC/OTP OR send the signed ITR V to CPC for verification.
The Offline Utility for ITRs is used by every taxpayer who chooses to file their Income Tax Returns offline rather than online. You can file Income Tax Returns (ITRs) using the utilities by uploading the utility-generated JSON: after logging in to the e-Filing portal, or directly through the offline utility. This service on the e-Filing portal offers two separate offline utilities for filing ITRs: ITR-1 to ITR-4, and ITR-5 to ITR-7.
Overall, the new portal has a fresh feel to it and offers a greater range of services at one place. The improvements to the existing IT-enabled filings are a great addition. The use of chatbots and mobile apps would help simplify compliance and improve the taxpayers’ experience.
