Reasons why applicants declined the offer

In the month of October of 2020, about 2918 applicants were selected under the PMAY(U) by the PMC, out of which 731 families only claimed them. There is a new set of lists in which new applicants are selected and urged to claim their unclaimed homes. Even after passing through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana eligibility, the applicants have decided to reject the offer due to these reasons:

  • According to one of the applicants, 10% of the total amount of the apartment needed to be paid within the first month. The applicant was unable to prepare such a large sum of money at such short notice because of the unemployment caused by the lockdown.

  • The size of the apartment is one of the reasons why many choose to let go of their unclaimed houses for a bigger house.

  • Most of the applicants changed their locality because of the pandemic and were unable to check their names in the list.

  • Since the draw of lotteries took place in 2017 many of the applicants changed their contact numbers and were unreachable.

  • A lot of the applicants were unemployed during the quarantine. Additionally, many have a bad credit history and have previous unsettled debts which is why financial institutions waver before giving them the required loans to avail the offer.
