Understanding the Ex-Dividend Date

Tata Steel Ltd

Tax Implications on Dividend Income

Since April 2020, dividend income is taxable in the hands of investors. Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) is applied at 10% on annual dividend income exceeding ₹5,000 for resident investors. Non-resident investors are subject to a 20% TDS rate, subject to applicable Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) provisions. Interest paid on borrowed funds used for investment can be claimed as a deduction up to 20% of the dividend income; other related expenses are not deductible.
