A NISM certification is essential for those aspiring to work in areas like mutual fund distribution, investment advisory, equity dealing, compliance, and more. This guide outlines who is eligible, the steps to register, and what to expect from the exam and certification process.
NISM exams are designed to be inclusive and accessible to a wide range of individuals. Here's what you need to know about the eligibility criteria:
Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
Educational Background: No specific educational qualifications are required.
Professionals and Students Welcome: Whether you're a fresh graduate, a working professional, or an independent investor, you're eligible to appear.
No Prior Experience Needed: You don't need any background in finance or investments to begin your NISM journey.
Applying for and obtaining a NISM certification involves a structured and digital-friendly process:
Visit the NISM Certification Portal and register by providing details such as your full name, email address, and a valid ID proof. You'll also be asked to upload a recent passport-size photo and verify your email address via a link sent to your inbox.
Once your account is activated, log in and browse through the list of available exams. You may select from certifications in mutual fund distribution, equity dealing, or investment advisory, depending on your area of interest.
Select your preferred exam date and location from the available slots. NISM offers exams at multiple test centres across India throughout the year.
Proceed to make the payment using a credit card, debit card, or net banking. The fee varies depending on the exam series, typically ranging from ₹1,500 to ₹3,000.
On the scheduled date, report to your test centre with the admit card and an original photo ID. The exams are computer-based and typically include 100 multiple-choice questions to be answered within 2 hours.
If you clear the exam, your certificate will be issued digitally. You can download it from the NISM portal within 15 working days. Most certificates are valid for three years.
The digital certificate will contain your name, photograph, certificate number, and validity date. You can use this document for job applications or regulatory filings. It is advisable to save a digital copy and take prints for physical documentation.
Before your certificate expires, you’ll need to renew it to maintain your credentials:
Reattempt the Exam: Retake the same certification exam.
CPE Programme: Enrol in a CPE session conducted by NISM-approved trainers. These sessions are usually one-day workshops and exempt you from reappearing for the test.
Certificates renewed via CPE are also valid for three years.
Having a NISM certificate adds credibility and opens up career avenues in India’s securities markets:
SEBI Compliance: Mandatory for several roles in the financial services industry.
Career Advancement: Enhances your resume and professional standing.
Industry Recognition: Acknowledged by brokers, asset management companies, and regulatory bodies.
Skill Validation: Demonstrates your knowledge of market practices and regulations.
Accessible Learning: Study materials are available for free on the NISM portal.
NISM certifications provide a structured and recognised entry point into the world of finance and securities. With no stringent eligibility criteria and a straightforward application process, it serves as a recognised way to validate understanding of market mechanisms and open doors to regulatory-compliant roles in the industry. Whether you're looking to become a mutual fund distributor, equity dealer, or investment advisor, NISM credentials are a valuable asset.

NISM certification can be applied for by any individual who is 18 years or older, without any formal academic or professional eligibility requirements.
A NISM certificate remains valid for three years from the date it is issued.
A NISM certification can be renewed without retaking the exam by completing a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) session before its expiry date.
The exam pattern for NISM certifications generally consists of multiple-choice questions conducted over two hours, with most exams requiring a minimum 60% score to pass.
The NISM exam is currently conducted at authorised test centres, although some certifications may offer the option of remote proctored exams.
A separate course is not mandatory to pass the NISM exam, but NISM provides study materials and mock tests that can help candidates prepare effectively.
